On September 6, 2014, I will be riding my bike with my husband, our older daughter, and a number of family and friends in the Closer To Free Ride for Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven. The loop that we will be riding is 25 miles long. I know from my training rides that anything that can and will happen with your equipment while you are riding; chains will fall off, tires will go flat and gears will become stuck.
For my Networked Learning Project for ED 7714, I'd like to learn how to perform basic bicycle maintenance as well as troubleshoot any emergency repair needs that may arise during the course of a long-distance ride. Specifically, I would like to learn how to change a tire on my own and repair a derailleur.
We use Pedal Power in Middletown as our primary resource for cycling equipment and advice. They offer free workshops on bike maintenance and repair. I would like to attend one of the clinics listed here on the third Thursday of July or August. I also plan on finding some good YouTube and DIY videos as well as utilizing some friends who are 'experts' in the field as resources.
